Tuesday the 27th
Valley Tea Rooms

Afternoon tea with scones and Devonshire cream in Arizona? Yes, it's possible to enjoy one of those very British, dainty social gatherings in the desert, sitting with friends and chatting over a pot of freshly brewed tea. Let the conviviality flow!

The Teeter House

A Midwestern style bungalow that exudes the warmth of days past is the perfect setting for a Victorian tearoom in downtown Phoenix's Heritage Square. A Full Afternoon Tea is a four-course affair with an aperitif, scones with Devonshire cream, finger sandwiches with fruit and candied walnuts and dessert of miniature sweets ($18.95 per person). Gourmet meals are also prepared in-house.

Open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. dinner on Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 to 11 p.m.

622 E. Adams St., Phoenix. 602-252-4682, theteeterhouse.com.

Abbey Gardens

The rosebud patterned china, dolls, teddy bears and pink décor is enough to keep men away, but patrons partaking in a "Ceremony of Loveliness" here are just as likely to be men, with mothers and girlfriends in tow. Select a teacup and choose a pot of Afternoon Darjeeling, Earl Grey, Blackcurrant, Cranberry Hibiscus or other variety. The ceremony is accompanied by tea sandwiches and savories, scones and sweets ($22.95).

Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

1837 W. Guadalupe Road, Mesa. 480-730-1819, abbeygardens.net.

Mandala Tea Room

An urban tea lounge and organic vegetarian kitchen set in a contemporary fine art gallery in the arts district of Old Town Scottsdale. Chill out over one of more than 40 teas and infusions.

Open Mondays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

7027 E. Fifth Ave., Scottsdale. 480-423-3411, mandalatearoom.com.

Hackett House

A historic Tempe site that housed its first bakery in the late 1800s. In the room that was once William Hilge's bake shop, the Tempe Sister City organization runs a gift shop and Friendship Rooms.

Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays from September through May and open limited hours on Wednesdays through the summer.

95 W. Fourth St., Tempe. 480-350-8181 or tempesistercity.org/Hackett_House/hackett.html

The Tea Shoppe

Neither Victorian nor modern, this place falls in between with a shabby-chic, home-like type of feel. Afternoon tea comes with four types of finger sandwiches, scones with lemon curd that is made in-store and three to four mini desserts ($13.95). A small gift shop sells tea items. Open also for lunch.

Open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily except Mondays, when it's open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

7005 N. 58th Ave., Glendale. 623-463-6484.

The concert, which will be the region’s biggest summer party, also features Keith Urban, LeAnn Rimes, Gary Allen, and Sammy Hagar.

Tickets to Chesney’s biggest summer block party will go on sale on Saturday, February 23 at 10 a.m. at the stadium ticket office, all TicketMaster locations, charge-by-phone at (480) 784-4444, or online at Ticketmaster.com.

Chesney is the current and winner of three consecutive Academy of Coutnry Music and Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year awards. His 2007 tour was the second highest grossing tour of the year, drawing over 1-million fans.

Chesney’s stadium shows have become legendary.

“It’s amazing to me how much intimacy you can have in a place that big,” Chesney marvels. “But there’s something in those big shows you can’t get anywhere else: a whole other kind of energy. You feel those fans all the way to the top, and there’s nothing like it. And they come to have a big day with us; you can hear it when they sing ‘Back Where I Come From’ or ‘Anything But Mine.’ It’s a blast, and I can’t wait.

“We’re changing it up to keep it interesting,” added Chesney who last year conquered the NFL Stadiums in Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Seattle. “Anyone who’s been to one of these shows knows… the folks sharing the stage with us put out a lot of fire power! We have a big stage, and everybody does their very biggest show. It’s pretty exciting to see everybody bringing their biggest game… but then, isn’t that the whole point of getting into a stadium in the first place?”

Monday the 26th
Local Zoos

There's a lot more to do at today's zoos than gawk at animals in cages. The habitats have become bigger and closer to the natural environment, while interactive programming gives visitors a chance to get up close and personal with the critters. Here are four opportunities to commune with the beasts.

1. Giraffe Feeding Station: It might be the most popular spot at Wildlife World Zoo. Standing on a platform tall enough to see eye to eye with the long-neck tree-grazers, visitors can buy handfuls of tasty giraffe pellets (50 cents) and pour them directly onto the incredibly long and curly tongues of the eager eaters. You can also go inside the aviaries during feeding times for lories (a type of parrot) and turacos (a colorful African bird).

Details: Wildlife World Zoo, 16501 W. Northern Ave., Litchfield Park. $16.99, $8.99 ages 3-12. 623-935-9453, wildlifeworld.com. OAS_AD('ArticleFlex_1')

2. Feed a Tiger: If holding out apple bits for parrots isn't exciting enough, visit Out of Africa to get up close and personal with the striped predators (2 p.m. Wednesday-Sundays, $3). The park has a number of "shows" designed to demonstrate the natural behaviors of wild animals; the most popular is "Tiger Splash," which combines hunting instincts with a whole lot of water.

Details: Out of Africa Wildlife Park, 3505 W. Highway 260, Camp Verde. $20-$32. 928-567-2840, outofafricapark.com.

Heard Museum

Life in a Cold Place: Arctic Art at the Heard Museum:

Dwight and Maie Heard's passion for collecting Native American art was the seed that would eventually bloom into a museum with a worldwide reputation. In 1929, the Heards displayed their collection to the public and became a fixture in the Phoenix art and philanthropic communities.

In the following years, the collection expanded with museum acquisitions and gifts of Native works from other art lovers. In 1999, after 70 years of growth, the museum underwent a multi-million dollar expansion and today is itself a jewel in the crown of the art world. With both permanent and rotating exhibits on display, docents constantly study to share background on the artwork and the artists. Docent-led tours occur frequently and are included in the price of admission.

Several years ago, the Goldwater family donated the late Senator Barry Goldwater's personal collection of katsina dolls to the Heard. Such auspicious donations come from many collectors and help the Heard to maintain its place at the top of the Native American art field. -- Sheila Roe

Desert Botanical Garden

Illustrating Nature: The Tradition Continues at Desert Botanical Garden

Founded in 1937, the Desert Botanical Garden presents a world-class exhibit of arid land plants. The garden maintains more than 50,000 plants and cacti, which represent 2000 different species of plant life. For a visual feast of cacti, century plants and aloes, check out the 1/3-mile Discovery Trail, or branch off onto smaller interpretive trails and explore plant/animal interaction, wildflower displays, and gardening and landscaping exhibits. Most days you can catch a wide array of birds as many make their nests in the garden. Quite often, you'll see hummingbirds, gila woodpeckers, cactus wrens and curve-billed thrashers. When hunger strikes you, make a pit stop at the Arcadia Farms Patio Cafe in the relaxed setting of the Ullman Terrace. Also, the extensive gift shop offers a wide selection of books, toys and gardening paraphernalia.

Kids Gallery at Phoenix Art Museum

After a yearlong hiatus, the Phoenix Art Museum has brought back its children's gallery, where kids can see, touch and play with art.

The redesigned gallery, PhxArtKids, is now on the second floor, in what used to be the Orme Lewis Gallery, and is filled with activities that provide learning experiences for children. Examples include:

• A painting divided into grids, which encourages children to draw the painting in sections, an activity that teaches children to "slow down the eye" and appreciate detail. OAS_AD('ArticleFlex_1')

• A touchable painting designed especially for the gallery by Arizona artist Jim Waid. The painting encourages touching, and explains the use of textures in art.

• The "shoe clue" game, where children match footprints to footwear, using pieces from the Fashion Design Gallery.

Each activity includes an activity card, explaining activities children can do in the rest of the museum, and an activity to do at home.

What you won't see at the children's museum are the traditional art-making tools, such as glue and scissors, in an effort to prevent accidents elsewhere in the museum.

The former children's gallery was closed in 2005 to make way for an expansion of the Museum Store, part of the $41.2 million construction project scheduled for completion in November that also includes a new four-level gallery wing, new lobby and plaza and an outdoor sculpture garden.

The museum is at 1625 N. Central Ave., or McDowell Road and Central Avenue.
